My mom just left after a great week-long visit. It was perfect timing for me, as Matt put in a few 15-hour work days last week and it would've been a rather depressing time for all of us if she hadn't been here. As it was, it was just a depressing time for Matt. The long work days, that is. But part of my mom's visit included some prolonged one-on-one time with Bo while Matt and I went to the city for the day.
It was pretty great to get out and enjoy NYC. It was one of the best trips we've had, I think, just because everything went really smoothly, we spent time in the same area all day, and scored some great deals. I went to the MOMA for the first time (free after four on Fridays) and saw so many famous works, it was incredible. Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Warhol, Pollock . . . oh my. Matt's more the art expert but even little old me could appreciate the collection.
Recognize this?
I've actually been to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and remember being annoyed that Starry Night wasn't displayed there . . . but I got to see it after all!
I had no idea that Monet's water lilly series were painted on such huge canvases.
We managed to snag some great tickets for House of Blue Leaves, a play starring Ben Stiller and Edie Falco. So that was great. But although we enjoyed the freedom of traipsing about the city, we still missed our little Bo Bear . . . and got him his first tool set at the amazing FAO Schwarz.
Besides letting Matt and me run around town, my treated us to some great meals and fun times. She decided she needed to try out the kayak before she left, so we dragged it out of storage and cleaned out all the dead leaves and spiders that had taken residence in it. We threw it in the truck and drove it down to the water and I talked her through where to go. But then she got cold feet when I told her you had to walk through the grass to get to the water and insisted I do it first to show her how. So I got in our yellow kayak to show her how easy it was, and then our neighbor appeared and lent us her kayak, so we got to paddle around in the sun together.
Unfortunately, I didn't bother checking the tides, so we had a harder time getting out than in. I plodded through the pluff mud rather unsuccessfully as it tried to swallow my flip-flops with each step. There was some shrieking and laughing involved . . . after witnessing my struggle, my mom opted for a different, more clean route.
stinky mud.
We had a real Long Island experience the day before she left. We picked up sandwiches at a classic deli in town and took them down to the harbor to eat them.
Coco and Bo
and since I never get pictures with Bo . . .
Somehow he looks really old here, or something.
We enjoyed her visit and look forward to the next one!!
